going to starbucks way too much

yea.  i live at starbucks.  but only because they are everywhere in chicago.  i generally have a can of monster energy in the morning.  and then 1-2 more coffee’s through the day.

and no, i’m not one of these fru-fru coffee drinkers that takes 30 seconds just to annunciate my drink.  like Frappuccino Extra Hot With Foam Whipped Cream Upside Down Double Blended. what the hell is that even?  i heard a guy actually complaining about the amount of caramel they put in his coffee drink.  coffee drink fail.

what do i like?  well first off, my coffee brewing equipment at home prolly costs more than your fancy new 3d lcd tv.  and no i dont have some fancy “all in one” pushbutton machine.  i make everything by hand.  that makes me sound like a coffee snob.  but hey, i’ll drink cold coffee from a 24 hour dennys if i have to cause you see, i have an addiction.

my drink of choice….bold black coffee.  nothing added.  imagine that.  if anything is ever added it would only be shots of properly made espresso (reject fake starbucks push-button espresso).

my point of all of this???  starbucks is giving away 1lb of bold coffee if you collect 8 stickers over 8 weeks by drinking a at least one bold coffee each week.  and i’m stoked cause they just handed me all the stickers i could want just cause i go in there so much (and try to drink straight out of the machines.)  i know.  some people say their coffee beans have a “burnt” flavor.  and they do.  but i’m not a coffee snob…not when you have a bad addiction.

less pizza, wings and bacon

i broke my toe, quit running, playing hockey and snowboarding…and starting eating lots of pizza, wings, bacon and beer for about 6 weeks.  yea its a rough life.

now that my foot is healed, i can have fun playing outside in the snow again.  and get running too.  eating good goes with that.  i love to cook but only recently learned–thanks to my tenure at google and their awesome food and chefs.

so with good cooking and sports, i should (in theory) be back in shape in no time.  :)  in theory.

eating good in 2010…

do i still find time to cook with all this crazy cellphone buying? hell yes. cooking rocks because you can use FIRE and SHARP KNIVES!

sometimes i fall off the wagon and order pizza or fast food but honestly….nothing beats cooking good fresh food. i go for recipes that are FAST. i wanna be eating before you can run over to the drive thru.

here something easy to make (less than 10 minutes) that tastes great!! on the left is seared yellow fin tuna. you can make that in a nice cast iron skillet on a medium heat with a little mix of canola oil and extra virgin olive oil. a little dusting of salt/pepper is fine. its hard to make…you have to remember to turn it over once. it cooks FAST (i.e. seared)

on the right is awesome greens. everything fresh. we have red chard and collard greens with cranberries and raisins in a sherry wine olive oil/garlic/green onion/pine nut base. cooks in about 3 minutes on a very high heat.

are you hungry yet? oh and with all that flavor….its hard to believe that its healthy. thats the part that blows my mind.

awsome food or just flavorless weeds on a plate. i think awesome.awesome food or just flavourless weeds on a plate.   i think awesome.

while i dont live in japan and i dont run windows 7 doesnt mean i cant use a little american ingenuity and build my own. thats right, i can use my engineering talent and mad sandwich making skills to build the most retarded burger ever.  the seven layer whopper.  so two double and one triple whopper later… here it is.

my very own american windows 7 whopper. thank god i run linux. windows 7 shit like this will kill you.

home of the ol’ 96er

so yesterday i played hockey and lifted weights.  today i got home at 8pm, i ran 5 miles and then decided to have a little cookout.  i cooked up a bad ass 36 oz bone in 3 inch think porterhouse steak!!  thats 36oz of beef.  i cooked it and ate i it. it was a little hard to cook because the bone keeps the meat cold and the outer edges cook faster and it was so damn thick! i cooked it at like 325 degrees and i have to say it came out quite good.

it reminds me of that movie with john candy called ‘the great outdoors’ where he ate some 96oz steak.  it was called the ol’ 96er.  here is a 3 minute clip from that movie of him eating the steak. i love the log menus that they order from.  how cheezy.

nutritional information in a 36 oz porterhouse:

  • 82g fat
  • 204g protein
  • 1625 calories
  • 620mg cholesterol
the raw form. 3lbs of meat. in person it just looks so thick.

nothing beats an 11pm cookout on a school night.

ate it clean. every last little piece.

ate it clean. every last little piece. part of the fun was holding the bone with my "paw" while i gnawed at the meat.

self portrait after eating the streak. still 5'11" and 161lbs....errr 164lbs after eating the 3 lb steak!!

gettin my money’s worth…

…outta that gas range that i bought?  you decide.  does this look like good eats? or maybe just a bunch of fcn weeds i cut out of the yard and tried to dress up some takeout from boston market.

the pork is broiled and infused with garlic and rosemary.  the scallops are sautéed in a garlic butter sherry sauce and then grill-seared to give nice char flavor.  the summer squash is grilled in a lime vinaigrette with capers and cilantro.

this coming from a guy that could not make soup from out of a can without setting the kitchen on fire just one year ago.  yes the famous i cant believe you set the kitchen on fire making a can of soup incident was just a year ago.  how time flies.

crappy microwave’s days are numbered

i started cooking 1 year ago and i told myself that if i was still cooking after a year, i would get myself a new gas range.  well its been a year and today i got a new range.

its an electrolux ew30ds65g and its sweet.  for my first thing, i cooked sautéd ginger shrimp.  i did the install myself and i also cut the stainless steel backdrop and installed that.  i thought it would look cool.  i think it does.

now, that crap microwave has to go.  i want something decent and something stainless steel too.

here is what i like so far about the range:

  • power.  18000 btu burner.  that shit burned the hair off my arm.  YEAH!!
  • looks.  the thing i had in there before looked like a trailer court range.
  • the power and my hairless arm.  oh yea.  talked about that already.
  • i think i’m in hells kitchen.  SHUT IT DOWN YOU *BLEEP* DONKEY!!

my next dishes will be seared yellow fin tuna.  also some green and yellow summer squash and also some pork.  oh and all this healthy cooking let me take off 20lbs and keep me under 165 for the past year!!

salmon

salmon is so good when you cook it light and with fresh ingredients.  my favorite way to make it is use a fresh piece (should not have ammonia smell before cooking it) and cook in a cast iron skillet that contains a small amount of 80/20 mixture of canola/extra virgin olive oil.  cook over a medium heat and turn over once.   when finished, put some fresh cilantro and lemon zest.  so light and so much flavor.  and fast.  this is a hearty piece of salmon.  costed $3.50 and it is ready to eat in less than 5 minutes.  fast cheap eats.

tater tots – part 2 (EPIC FAIL)

in my quest to change the world by inventing some sort of super tater tot, ive created a fail of epic portions.  im giving up on life.  the kitchen is closed.  look at this horrific picture! seriously. this looks worse than some early morning snack served up by a super-soaker third shift waffle mama after an all night drinking binge.  i threw this shit away and will spend my remaining years either coding or drinking in a place far far away from any kitchen.  i promise. game over man.  game over.  :)

tater tots

tots are serious business at the ü.  so what do you get when you mix kraft mac’n'cheese mix with tots? not much.  turns out the cheese powder is just a bit bland.  i’m not done with this yet.  gonna get some zesty-ier tasting powder and trying again.  its on.

just not zesty enough
